Data Centres

Data centres require a different solution to comfort cooling because:

  • they have a cooling demand 24 hours a day 365 days a year
  • their operation is critical to the business
  • the cooling load density is much greater than for comfort cooling (4 or 5 times higher in most cases).

It is therefore essential that the air conditioning solution for such rooms takes these factors into account.

It is a common mistake to install comfort cooling equipment which is undersized for the cooling load, and also for no allowance to be made for back-up cooling in the event of equipment failure.

Another common mistake is to use equipment which is designed to operate in cooling mode only down to outside temperatures of 5ºC. In most server room applications the demand for cooling is high irrespective of the outside temperature, so care should be taken to select equipment that is capable of cooling even at winter design temperatures.

Also, if you have a fire detection system installed, then it is important that the air conditioning system is connected to this, so that it shuts down on fire alarm and re-starts automatically when the alarm is re-set.

We at EMS have extensive experience of working in server rooms, and we understand the factors that determine the best air conditioning solution for this environment.
