April 2011: Top Safety Accreditation for EMS Ltd

EMS Ltd has recently received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, a programme which recognises very high standards of health and safety practice amongst UK contractors.

This is a leading edge scheme, designed to help industry improve its safety record.

EMS Ltd specialises in the service and maintenance of air conditioning and ventilation systems, with a view to maximising efficiencies and minimising down time.  The company’s application for SAFEcontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business.

Alan Meredith – Director at EMS Ltd comments “Maintaining high standards in health and safety is very important to us and we felt that by adopting a good risk management policy this will benefit both our existing and potential clients”.

SAFEcontractor is applicable to most sectors although it is particularly relevant to food, manufacture, property, facilities management, retail and leisure sectors, all of which are big users of contract services.

Under the SAFEcontractor system businesses undergo a vetting process, which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice.

Only those companies meeting the high standards are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website, www.safecontractor.com.

November 2010: High level interest in EMS maintenance services at Energy Solutions Exhibition

The EMS stand at the Energy Solutions Exhibition

With the pressure on companies to continually save money at every level – energy saving being a priority, EMS decided that the Energy Solutions Show at Olympia was the best place to communicate the various benefits of the EMS service.  With over 6,900 businesses, consultants, and professionals streaming through the doors we had a very successful couple of days on our Exhibition Stand and we made some very good contacts.

Of particular interest was our demonstration of the Clima Checker service tool. This is a performance analysing device which, when connected to an air conditioning or refrigeration system, records the actual efficiency of the plant and gives the Service Engineer an insight as to how the performance could be improved.

We connected the Clima Checker to a working system on the Stand, and demonstrated to visitors how, when making some adjustments, the efficiency showed an improvement.

We now introduce regular performance analysis into the standard maintenance regime for our service and maintenance contracts.

January 2010: Air Conditioning Inspections

Article 9 of the EPB (Energy Performance of Buildings) Regulations requires that, from 1 January 2009, all air conditioning systems of over 250 kW capacity must be inspected by a competent person.

A system is defined under the Regulations as the sum of all individual units in a building under the control of one person. Therefore, you may have a number of systems each below 250 kW capacity but, if they add up to greater than 250 kW, then they fall into the requirement for inspection.

From 1 January 2011 this Regulation extends to include all systems of over 12 kW capacity. Again, if you have two 7 kW systems in one building controlled by one person, then they are considered as one system of over 12 kW capacity.

A competent person is a qualified energy assessor accredited by, for example, CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers). There are other accreditation bodies. EMS employs a competent person, and would happy to assist both existing clients, and also potential future clients, with this service.

The inspection is in the form of a visual assessment of the efficiency of the plant. A Report is then provided with details of this assessment, plus recommendations to the operator/owner in ways to improve the efficiency.

There is no mandatory obligation to act on the recommendations of the inspection report. However, in the vast majority of cases it would be likely that the implementation of some or all of the recommendations would result in energy saving costs in excess of the cost of the report within the first year of the report.
